Parent Support Projects

The purpose of these projects is to support parents of children with disabilities in their endeavors to provide the best for their children.  One current project is specifically designed to assist families in the transition process from one Early Childhood Program to another (i.e.-Early Steps to the school system or Head Start) by providing written information using “family friendly language”, workshops, and by providing individual technical assistance.

Through the Transition Project, we have developed lists of community resources and fact sheets to assist families in accessing support services available in the community. Training has also been offered to families to help promote seamless transitions from Early Steps to preschool programs whether through the school system or other community settings. We have two social workers on staff who also assist parents and staff with information and referrals for social services.

In addition to the Transition Project, staff are pursuing avenues for providing staff and families support in the area of mental health and positive behavioral support. Families of children in some schools, Head Start, and Early Head Start are provided with strategies to support their child and family’s social and emotional development. Specific information on the use of Positive Behavior Supports that will enhance and strengthen the social/emotional development of children is shared as a result of child observations and interviews with parents. By providing this type of assistance, we hope that families will be better equipped to respond to and decrease socially unacceptable behaviors thus minimizing the effects these behaviors can have on making developmental progress.
